Luxi Town 泸西县城

Famous for the Alu Old Caves.

Luxi is one of the many large faceless towns in Yunnan’s east.

Its main attraction is the Ancient Alu Cave rated a national level scenic spot. The entrance to the caves is about two kilometres to the north of town, along the road which connects Luxi to Luliang. The complex is composed of three interconnected caves once inhabited by the Alu people, a branch of the Yi. A visit entails a guided tour through the three caves including a short boat ride on an underground lake, where – as often in these caves – fish species have adapted to life without light. All is garishly illuminated and – for visitors with limited imagination – signs are posted to explain the various formations, including the ‘God Sent Wonder’, a giant phallus-shaped stalagmite.

Travel Notes

There are a few hotels next to the main bus terminal, but overall Luxi is not a tourist town.
