Butterfly Spring 蝴蝶泉

Beauty spot north of Zhoucheng.

Butterfly spring is a beautiful spring on the slope of Cangshan that became well known through the 1950s film Five Golden Flowers 五朵金花, where a key sequence was filmed supposedly at this location. However, the Ming traveller Xu Xiake, who passed through in 1639, did not mention this spring, instead mentioned a 蛱蝶泉 a few Chinese miles further south. I assume, the current Butterfly Spring park was created as a tourist attraction after the movie at a convenient location, particularly as Xu recorded his butterfly spring as extremely smelly.

Most of the year, Butterfly Spring is given over to large groups of tourists, but on the 15th day of the 4th month the annual 会叠泉会 is held, a song and dance meeting attended by many, mostly elderly, Bai people.
