The Great Leap Forward, Mao's attempt at a rapid industrialization of China's hinterland, resulted in famine and starvation on a nationwide scale not seen before. Becker traces the impact of the famine in the various regions, but Yunnan, where some 500.000 people perished, is barely covered.
